Single File Reciprocation

Clinical Tip

Both are single-file reciprocating. WaveOne Gold has parallelogram design. Reciproc Blue offers higher flexibility with pre-bend memory.

## When to choose which

Choose Reciproc Blue when

- the canal is severely curved and bench fatigue life at body temperature matters: the R25 outlasted the Primary in a 60-degree ceramic canal at 35 °C (PMID 40849465) and in every room-temperature test read for this page
- you want the middle third kept centred with less cutting on the inner wall: Reciproc Blue was the most centred system in that third in resin blocks (PMID 35591361)

Choose WaveOne Gold when

- preparation time matters more than fatigue margin: the Primary finished simulated 40-degree canals faster than the R25 (121.47 s against 192.47 s) (PMID 36381824)
- you prefer a slightly smaller final taper (25/.07 against 25/.08) with coronal and whole-canal centring that matched or bettered Reciproc Blue in two simulated-canal studies (PMID 35591361, PMID 36381824)
- you accept the fatigue trade-off knowingly: in a double curvature at 35 °C WaveOne Gold recorded the lowest cycle count of four systems while the other three, Reciproc Blue included, did not differ from one another (PMID 40849465)

## What the comparative evidence shows

6 comparative full-text studies read for this pair

Six comparative full texts were read for this pair: three cyclic-fatigue studies and three shaping studies in simulated canals. Both files are single-file reciprocating instruments with a size 25 tip; the R25 carries an 8 % apical taper and an S-shaped cross-section, the Primary a 7 % apical taper and an off-centred parallelogram. Their heat treatments differ, and so do their austenite-finish temperatures: 38 °C for Reciproc Blue and 49 °C for WaveOne Gold in one calorimetry run (PMID 33505619).

On fatigue, every room-temperature test favoured Reciproc Blue. In a 40-degree canal the R25 ran 1,117 s to fracture against 261 s for the Primary at 22 °C (PMID 33505619); in a 60-degree canal at 20 °C in water it reached 7,914 cycles against 4,626 (PMID 31857861). At body temperature the picture narrows. In the first study both times fell and the gap shrank to 292 s against 149 s (PMID 33505619); in the second, at 35 °C in water, the two files no longer differed (1,349 against 1,206 cycles) (PMID 31857861). A 2025 study in ceramic canals at 35 °C reopened the gap: Reciproc Blue recorded the highest cycle count of four systems in a 60-degree single curvature (1,837 against 594 for WaveOne Gold), while in a double curvature all four systems fell to a few hundred cycles and WaveOne Gold remained the lowest (PMID 40849465).

Stiffness moved the other way at body temperature. Reciproc Blue's bending resistance at 37 °C (1.12 N) exceeded WaveOne Gold's (0.71 N), which the authors tie to Reciproc Blue sitting almost fully austenitic at that temperature while WaveOne Gold keeps a share of R-phase; at room temperature the two did not differ (PMID 33505619).

On shaping, no simulated-canal study found a difference in transportation between the two files. In 40-degree resin canals with three-file sequences, transportation was equal and Reciproc Blue scored highest on overall centring, a difference that reached significance only against the third system, ProTaper Next (PMID 36883021). In a second resin-block study the apical third was shaped alike, Reciproc Blue was the most centred system in the middle third while removing less resin from the inner wall, and WaveOne Gold was more centred in the coronal third (PMID 35591361). In a third, the two files matched on whole-canal centring, both beat a third system coronally, and WaveOne Gold was more centred at one middle-third level (PMID 36381824).

Only one study timed the preparation: the Primary needed 121.47 s per simulated 40-degree canal against 192.47 s for the R25 (PMID 36381824). One study states that no instrument fractured during shaping (PMID 35591361); the other two report completed preparations without mentioning breakage.

What the read set does not cover: torsional strength, dentinal microcracks and clinical outcomes. The comparative papers on torsion, microcracks and finite-element bending are paywalled and were not read, so this page makes no claim on those axes.

## Head to head

| Axis | Reciproc Blue | WaveOne Gold | What the studies show |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Cyclic fatigue (bench) | Longer life in every room-temperature test; highest of four systems at 35 °C in a single curvature | Shorter life at room temperature; equal to Reciproc Blue at 35 °C in one study, lowest of four at 35 °C in another | Three static tests, 25-tip files, 40–60° canals; body-temperature results disagree between studies (PMID 33505619, PMID 31857861, PMID 40849465) |
| Transportation and centring | No transportation difference; most centred in the middle third in one resin study and numerically highest overall in another | No transportation difference; more centred in the coronal third and at one middle-third level | Simulated resin canals only; no extracted-tooth micro-CT study in the read set (PMID 36883021, PMID 35591361, PMID 36381824) |
| Flexibility at body temperature | Stiffer at 37 °C (1.12 N bending resistance); Af 38 °C | More flexible at 37 °C (0.71 N); Af 49 °C | Cantilever bending 3 mm from the tip; no difference at 22 °C (PMID 33505619) |
| Files per canal and time | One file (R25 25/.08); 192.47 s per simulated canal | One file (Primary 25/.07); 121.47 s per simulated canal | Time from one study in 40° resin canals (PMID 36381824); no fractures reported in the one study that states it (PMID 35591361) |

## Frequently asked

 01

Which file resists cyclic fatigue better, Reciproc Blue or WaveOne Gold?

Answer

At room temperature Reciproc Blue lasted longer in every bench test read for this page.

- 01 At body temperature the studies disagree: one found the two files equal at 35 °C (PMID 31857861), another found Reciproc Blue clearly ahead in a single curvature and both files low in a double curvature (PMID 40849465).
- 02 Treat the room-temperature margin as an upper bound.

 02

Is one file enough per canal with either system?

Answer

Both are single-file systems by design.

- 01 Two of the simulated-canal studies read here shaped each canal with the one size-25 file (PMID 35591361, PMID 36381824); the third ran the manufacturers' multi-file sequences (R25 then R40; Primary, Medium, Large) to reach a wider final shape, so it does not test the single-file claim (PMID 36883021).

 03

Which one keeps the canal more centred?

Answer

Neither transported more than the other in simulated canals.

- 01 Reciproc Blue was more centred in the middle third and overall in two studies, WaveOne Gold in the coronal third and at one middle level in another (PMID 35591361, PMID 36381824, PMID 36883021).
- 02 Extracted-tooth micro-CT data for this pair were not in the obtained full texts.

 04

What are the motor settings?

Answer

Both run on their manufacturer's preset reciprocation programme, Reciproc ALL for the R25 and WaveOne ALL for the Primary, on a compatible motor.

- 01 The full protocol pages list the programmes and the file sequences.

 05

Which is faster?

Answer

In the only timed comparison, WaveOne Gold Primary prepared simulated 40-degree canals in 121.

- 01 47 s against 192.
- 02 47 s for Reciproc Blue R25 (PMID 36381824).
- 03 That was resin, not dentine.
