### NiTi (Nickel-Titanium)

 Alloy

A super-elastic alloy (~56% nickel, ~44% titanium) used in most modern rotary files. Its shape-memory and flexibility allow instruments to navigate curved canals with less risk of transportation.

### Fire-Wire

### EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining)

 Alloy

A manufacturing method that uses electrical spark erosion instead of grinding to shape NiTi files. EDM produces a harder surface with micro-craters that improve cutting and fatigue resistance.

### MaxWire

 Alloy

## Motion Types

### Continuous Rotation

 Motion

A drive mode in which the file rotates 360 degrees in one direction without reversal. Most multi-file NiTi systems use continuous rotation, typically between 300-600 rpm depending on the manufacturer.

### Reciprocation

 Motion

A drive mode that alternates between a larger counter-clockwise cutting angle and a smaller clockwise releasing angle. It reduces the risk of torsional failure and is used by single-file systems.

### Adaptive Motion

 Motion

A proprietary drive mode (Kerr/SybronEndo) that automatically switches between continuous rotation and reciprocation based on the intra-canal load detected on the file.

### Hybrid Motion

 Motion

A general term for drive programs that combine elements of continuous rotation and reciprocation, either within one revolution cycle or by switching modes adaptively during instrumentation.

## Concepts

### Taper

 Concept

The rate of increase in file diameter from tip to shaft, expressed as a percentage per millimeter. A .06 taper means the diameter increases 0.06 mm for each millimeter of length.

### Tip Size

 Concept

The diameter of the file at its tip (D0), measured in hundredths of a millimeter. A size 25 file has a tip diameter of 0.25 mm. Tip size determines the minimum apical preparation diameter.

### Cyclic Fatigue

 Concept

Metal fatigue caused by repeated tension-compression cycles as a rotating file flexes around a canal curvature. It is the primary cause of unexpected file separation in curved canals.

### Torsional Resistance

 Concept

The ability of a file to resist fracture when its tip locks in the canal while the shaft continues to rotate. Higher torsional resistance reduces the risk of tip-driven breakage.

### Glide Path

 Concept

A smooth, reproducible pathway from canal orifice to the apical foramen created before rotary shaping. It is typically established with hand K-files (#10-#15) or dedicated mechanical path files.

### Working Length

 Concept

The distance from a coronal reference point to the apical constriction, defining how deep each instrument should reach. Accurate working length helps prevent under- or over-instrumentation.

### Apex Locator

 Concept

An electronic device that measures impedance changes to determine the position of the apical foramen. Modern multi-frequency apex locators are accurate to within 0.5 mm in most clinical conditions.

### Crown-Down Technique

 Concept

A shaping strategy that instruments the coronal portion of the canal first, then progressively works toward the apex. It reduces coronal interference and improves irrigant penetration.

### Canal Transportation

 Concept

An undesirable deviation of the prepared canal away from its original axis, usually occurring on the outer wall of a curvature. Flexible NiTi files significantly reduce transportation compared to stainless steel.

### Debris Extrusion

 Concept

The inadvertent pushing of dentin chips, pulp tissue, or irrigant beyond the apical foramen during instrumentation. Crown-down approaches and copious irrigation may help minimize extrusion.

### Reversible Pulpitis

 Concept

A clinical condition in which inflamed pulp tissue is expected to return to health once the irritant (such as caries or a leaking restoration) is removed. The hallmark is a short, sharp response to cold that subsides within a few seconds. It is generally managed by treating the cause rather than by root canal treatment.

### Irreversible Pulpitis

 Concept

A clinical condition in which inflamed pulp tissue is judged unlikely to recover, even after the irritant is removed. Pain is often lingering or spontaneous and may be poorly localized, and a prolonged response to cold is a common finding. Root canal treatment or extraction is usually considered, since the pulp is not expected to heal on its own.

### Pulp Necrosis

 Concept

Death of the dental pulp, in which the tissue no longer responds to sensibility tests such as cold or electric pulp testing. It commonly follows untreated irreversible pulpitis or trauma, and may be partial or complete. A necrotic pulp can lead to apical periodontitis if bacteria colonize the canal space.

### Apical Periodontitis

 Concept

Inflammation of the tissues around the root apex, usually a response to bacteria within an infected or necrotic canal system. It may be symptomatic (tenderness to percussion or biting) or detected only as a radiolucency on imaging. Management generally centers on disinfecting the canal through root canal treatment or, where indicated, retreatment or surgery.

### Vital Pulp Therapy

 Concept

A group of treatments that aim to preserve all or part of a living pulp rather than removing it, including indirect and direct pulp capping and pulpotomy. Calcium-silicate materials are often used to encourage a hard-tissue barrier. It is generally considered when the pulp is judged able to heal, such as in selected cases of reversible or early irreversible pulpitis.

### Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl)

 Concept

The most widely used endodontic irrigant. It dissolves organic pulp tissue and has broad antimicrobial action; concentration, volume, contact time, and safe delivery are the key clinical variables.

### EDTA

 Concept

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, a chelating agent used to remove the inorganic smear layer and soften calcified dentin. It is typically used as a final rinse, alternating with sodium hypochlorite.

### Smear Layer

 Concept

An amorphous layer of organic and inorganic debris created on the canal wall during instrumentation. Removing it — commonly with EDTA followed by sodium hypochlorite — can improve sealer penetration into dentinal tubules.

### Gutta-Percha

 Concept

The most common core material for root canal obturation. Thermoplastic and biocompatible, it is used with a sealer in single-cone, cold lateral, or warm vertical compaction techniques.

### Bioceramic Sealer

 Concept

A calcium-silicate-based root canal sealer that sets hydraulically in the presence of moisture. It is valued for biocompatibility and dimensional stability and is commonly used with single-cone obturation.

### File Separation

 Concept

Fracture and retention of part of a rotary or hand instrument inside the canal. Risk rises with cyclic and torsional fatigue, sharp curves, and overuse; management ranges from bypassing to retrieval or monitoring.

### Ledge Formation

 Concept

An artificial irregularity in the canal wall created when an instrument stops following the original path, often after loss of patency. A ledge can block apical access and is usually addressed with a pre-curved small hand file.

### Perforation

 Concept

An artificial communication between the canal system and the external tooth surface or periodontium. Prognosis depends on size, location, and how soon it is sealed, often with a calcium-silicate material.

### Master Cone

 Concept

The primary gutta-percha cone selected to match the size and taper of the final apical preparation. Its fit is typically verified by tactile resistance (tug-back) and a radiograph at working length before the canal is obturated.

## File Properties

### Cross-Section

 File Property

The geometric profile of a file when viewed in transverse section. Common designs include triangular, convex triangular, S-shaped, rectangular, and parallelogram; each affects cutting efficiency, flexibility, and debris removal.

### Heat Treatment

 File Property

A thermal or thermomechanical process applied to NiTi alloys — either before machining (e.g., M-Wire) or after (e.g., Gold treatment) — to modify their phase-transformation behavior. Heat-treated files generally show improved flexibility and cyclic fatigue resistance.

### Controlled Memory

 File Property

A property of certain heat-treated NiTi alloys that lack the superelastic snap-back of conventional NiTi. Controlled-memory files can be pre-curved to match canal anatomy before insertion.

### Shape Memory

 File Property

The ability of a NiTi alloy to return to its original shape after deformation when heated above its transformation temperature. Conventional NiTi files use this property to straighten after bending in the canal.

### Single-Use

 File Property

A manufacturer designation indicating a file is intended for one patient only. Single-use eliminates cross-contamination risk and avoids the cumulative fatigue of repeated sterilization cycles.

### Reusable

 File Property

A file designed for multiple uses after proper cleaning, inspection, and sterilization. Manufacturers provide discard criteria based on visual inspection; files should be discarded if unwinding, corrosion, or deformation is detected.

## Techniques

### Pecking Motion

 Technique

A gentle, short in-and-out apical advancement (1-3 mm) used during instrumentation. Each peck cuts a small amount of dentin before the file is withdrawn for cleaning and irrigation.

### Brushing Motion

 Technique

A lateral sweeping movement used mainly in the coronal and middle thirds to selectively remove dentin from the outer canal wall, particularly useful for flared or oval-shaped canals.

### Watch-Winding

 Technique

A manual oscillating technique where a hand file is rotated 30-60 degrees clockwise then counterclockwise while advancing apically. It is commonly used during initial glide path negotiation.

### Recapitulation

 Technique

Reinserting a small hand file (typically #10) to full working length between shaping instruments to confirm patency, break up debris packs, and maintain the glide path throughout the sequence.

### Passive Ultrasonic Irrigation (PUI)

 Technique

An irrigant activation method in which an ultrasonically driven file or tip agitates the irrigant in the canal without cutting dentin. The acoustic streaming it creates can help disrupt biofilm and remove debris from areas that a syringe rinse may not reach. It is typically used as a final activation step after canal shaping.

### Single-Cone Obturation

 Technique

An obturation technique using one gutta-percha cone matched to the final shaping file and seated with a sealer. It is simple and reproducible and is often paired with hydraulic calcium-silicate sealers.

### Warm Vertical Compaction

 Technique

An obturation technique that softens gutta-percha with heat and condenses it apically and laterally. It aims to fill canal irregularities and lateral canals more completely than cold techniques.

### Apical Gauging

 Technique

Estimating the diameter of the apical canal at working length, often by checking the first file that binds. It guides the choice of final apical size and helps confirm adequate apical preparation.

### Apical Patency

 Technique

Maintaining a clear, unobstructed path to the apical foramen, usually confirmed by passing a small patency file (e.g. #10) just through the terminus. It helps prevent blockage and ledging during shaping.

### Tug-Back

 Technique

The slight frictional resistance felt when the master gutta-percha cone is seated to working length and gently withdrawn. Tug-back suggests the cone fits snugly in the apical region and is commonly checked together with a radiographic cone-fit before obturation.
