# Master Apical File (MAF)

## Definition

The largest file taken to full working length during shaping, which sets the final apical preparation size. It is usually confirmed by gauging rather than assumed from the sequence, and it is the reference the master cone is matched to. A larger size is not automatically preferable, since apical diameter is weighed against remaining dentine and canal curvature.
