Screw-In Effect (Taper Lock)

Definition

The tendency of a rotating file to be drawn apically into the canal as its flutes engage dentine along a length of the wall. It is associated with positive rake angles, greater taper and a wider area of engagement, and it raises torsional load, which is why crown-down sequencing, light apical pressure and a short pecking motion are commonly used to limit it.
