## Protocol

### Glide Path

1. **Establish Access and Glide Path** — Prepare straight-line access to canal orifice. With lubrication in the canal, form a glide path with #10 and #15 hand files or mechanical glide path files to at least 2/3 of estimated canal length.
   - EdgeGlidePath or EdgeFind may be used as a mechanical glide path option
   - Establish working length with apex locator and/or radiograph
   - Confirm patency by taking #10 hand file 1mm past working length
2. **Confirm Patency** — Take #15 hand file to working length. Fill chamber with EDTA liquid (e.g., EdgeLube) before proceeding with rotary files.
   - Use EDTA liquid or gel for lubrication throughout the procedure
   - Pre-curve hand files for curved canals

### Shaping

1. **Shape Coronal 2/3 with S1 and S2** — With lubricant in the canal and light apical pressure, take S1 (17/.06) into the canal using an in-and-out motion while laterally brushing dentin on the outstroke. Continue until resistance is met or 2/3 down the canal. Then use S2 (17/.04) in the same manner. Switch between S1 and S2 until 2/3 is reached. _(File: S1 (17/.06) and S2 (17/.04) · 300-500 RPM · 2.94 Ncm (300 g-cm) · Continuous rotation)_
   - Use brushing motion on outstroke to enhance straight-line access
   - Irrigate with EDTA liquid after each file
   - Recapitulate with #10 hand file to working length between files
   - ⚠ Do not force files apically — use minimal apical pressure
   - ⚠ Take each file to length only one time and for no more than one second
2. **Coronal Enlargement (Optional)** — If a larger coronal shape is desired, use SX (25/.12) at any time after the coronal 2/3 is shaped. _(File: SX (25/.12) · 300-500 RPM · 2.94 Ncm (300 g-cm) · Continuous rotation)_
   - SX is optional — use only if additional coronal flaring is needed
   - SX is available only in 19mm length
3. **Extend Shaping to Working Length** — After coronal 2/3 is shaped, form glide path into apical 1/3 with hand files. Then switch between S1 and S2 until S2 reaches working length. _(File: S1 (17/.06) and S2 (17/.04) · 300-500 RPM · 2.94 Ncm (300 g-cm))_
   - Irrigate and recapitulate with #10 between each file
   - Confirm working length with apex locator before finishing

### Finishing

1. **Finish with F1 (and F2/F3 if Needed)** — Take F1 (20/.06) to working length. Gauge foramen with #20 hand file. If #20 is snug, the canal is ready to obturate. If #20 is loose, continue with F2 (25/.06), then gauge with #25 hand file. Use F3 (30/.06) or F4 (40/.06) if necessary. _(File: F1 (20/.06) → F2 (25/.06) → F3 (30/.06) · 300-500 RPM · 2.94 Ncm (300 g-cm) · Continuous rotation)_
   - Gauge foramen at WL with hand file matching the finishing file tip size
   - F4 and F5 are available for wider canals
   - Irrigate and recapitulate between finishing files
2. **Disinfection and Obturation** — Disinfect and obturate canals with matching gutta percha points. EdgeTaper matching GP points, paper points, EdgeCore carriers, and EdgeFill are available.
   - Matching GP points available for F1 through F5
   - EdgeCore carrier-based obturation available as matching accessory
   - Use size verifiers to determine proper carrier size if using thermal obturation

## Clinical Tips

- ProTaper-compatible file sequence — clinicians familiar with ProTaper Gold can transition with the same technique (per 2025 catalog)
- FireWire heat treatment may provide enhanced cyclic fatigue resistance — manufacturer claims 2x vs ProTaper Gold, 6x vs original ProTaper (bench data, 2025 catalog)
- Files may appear slightly curved due to heat treatment — this is normal, not a defect; they conform to canal anatomy once inside (per DFU)
- Safe unwinding feature — files are designed to unwind as a safety warning before separation
- Convex triangular cross-section per 2025 catalog
- Compatible with most rotary file electric motors and handpieces
- Use in clockwise rotary motion only — not compatible with reciprocating motors

## Warnings

- Use only in electric motor and handpiece designed for rotary files — not traditional rotary handpiece
- Do not use in reciprocating mode — clockwise rotation only (per DFU)
- Single patient use only — do not resterilize or reuse (per DFU)
- Contains nickel — do not use on patients with known nickel allergy
- Do not use in canals with very severe and sudden curvatures (per DFU)
- Clean flutes frequently — at least after each removal from the canal
- Do not force files apically — use minimal apical pressure
- Non-sterile — files need to be cleaned and sterilized (autoclave 134-137°C, min 3 min) before patient use

## Contraindications

- very severe and sudden curvatures (per DFU)
- known allergic sensitivity to nickel (per DFU)

## Best for

- ProTaper Gold alternative with FireWire heat treatment
- multi-file variable-taper sequence
- clinicians familiar with ProTaper technique
