## Protocol

### Glide Path

1. **Pre-Retreatment Assessment** — Take at least 2 X-rays from different angles to assess canal anatomy and existing obturation. In multirooted teeth, begin with the largest canal (per IFU).
   - Precise appreciation of canal anatomy is very important (per IFU)
   - Begin with the largest canal in multirooted teeth
   - Assess obturation quality and apical anatomy before starting retreatment

### Shaping

1. **Step 1: DR1 Initial Access** — Gently engage DR1 rotating at 800-1000 RPM and 1.5 Ncm into the obturation material to create a 3-4 mm starting point for the XP-endo Shaper tip. The active tip of DR1 facilitates initial penetration (per IFU). _(File: DR1 · 800-1000 RPM · 1.5 Ncm · Continuous rotation)_
   - DR1 has an active (cutting) tip designed for initial penetration into filling material
   - Only create a 3-4 mm starting point — do not attempt full GP removal with DR1
2. **Step 2: Solvent Application** — Place one drop of solvent in the coronal space created by DR1 and wait for at least 1 minute (per IFU).
   - Allow solvent to soften the obturation material before proceeding
   - One minute minimum contact time
3. **Step 3: GP Removal with XP-endo Shaper** — Place the tip of XP-endo Shaper into the prepared space, disengage slightly and start the motor at 1000-2500 RPM. Use pecking motion until the tip engages the gutta percha, then use light pressure to advance down the canal to working length. Add solvent if needed (per IFU). _(File: XP-endo Shaper 30/.04 · 1000-2500 RPM · 1.0 Ncm (recommended at 1000 RPM) · Pecking motion, then long gentle strokes)_
   - Note: unlike primary treatment, pecking motion is used initially for retreatment until file engages GP
   - Allow the Shaper to gently corkscrew around the gutta percha and tease out large strands
   - You may need to remove gutta percha from the instrument surface during the procedure
   - After GP removal, confirm working length with electronic apex locator
4. **Step 4: Final Shaping** — After WL confirmation, use the XP-endo Shaper for 10-15 additional long gentle strokes to WL and irrigate the canal to eliminate suspended debris (per IFU). _(File: XP-endo Shaper 30/.04 · 1000-2500 RPM · 1.0 Ncm (recommended at 1000 RPM))_
   - Fill pulp chamber and canals with NaOCl before final shaping strokes
   - 10-15 long gentle strokes to working length

### Finishing

1. **Step 5: XP-endo Finisher R — Final Cleaning** — Set the endo stop on XP-endo Finisher R to working length. Place into the canal, then start the motor (800-1000 RPM, 1.0 Ncm) and slowly thread to working length. Use for at least 1 minute with slow gentle longitudinal movements (per IFU). _(File: XP-endo Finisher R · 800-1000 RPM · 1.0 Ncm · At least 1 minute)_
   - Make small multidirectional movements to contact the full canal length
   - Avoid removing the instrument from the canal during use
   - Continue longer if debris is still coming out of the canal
   - Use copious NaOCl irrigation and suction to remove gutta percha and sealer tags

## Clinical Tips

- DR1 operates at 800-1000 RPM / 1.5 Ncm; XP-endo Shaper at 1000-2500 RPM / 1.0 Ncm; Finisher R at 800-1000 RPM / 1.0 Ncm (per IFU).
- The Shaper file uses MaxWire alloy — it appears straight at room temperature and expands at body temperature to adapt to canal anatomy.
- For retreatment, the XP-endo Shaper is used at higher RPM (up to 2500) compared to primary treatment (800-1000) to help engage and remove filling material.
- The Finisher R (ISO 30, zero taper) is a cleaning-only instrument — it does not shape the canal.
- All three instruments in this sequence are single use, with a maximum of 4 canals per instrument (per IFU).

## Warnings

- Single use only — maximum 4 canals per instrument (per IFU)
- Inspect instruments before use; discard if there are any visible defects (per IFU)
- Contains nickel — do not use on individuals with known allergic sensitivity to nickel or titanium (per IFU)
- Take at least 2 X-rays from different angles before retreatment (per IFU)
- In multirooted teeth, begin with the largest canal (per IFU)

## Contraindications

- Known allergic sensitivity to nickel or titanium (per IFU)

## Best for

- retreatment of previously obturated canals
- gutta percha and sealer removal
- 3D cleaning of canal walls after GP removal
