Reciprocating Motion

Reciprocating systems alternate between a larger counter-clockwise cutting stroke and a smaller clockwise release stroke. This asymmetric motion reduces torsional stress on the file, decreasing the risk of separation compared to continuous rotation. Single-file reciprocating systems simplify the workflow to one or two instruments per case, reducing cross-contamination risk and procedure time. The technique is particularly valuable in severely curved canals where cyclic fatigue resistance is particularly important.
